Artificial Intelligence Introduction & Core Concepts

From rule-based systems to deep neural networks and autonomous agents

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems, encompassing perception, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Narrow AI vs Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI): Systems designed and optimized to perform a single specific task with superhuman efficiency. Real-world examples include AlphaFold for protein structure prediction, autonomous chess engines like Stockfish, recommendation engines, and medical imaging diagnostics. All AI currently in production is Narrow AI.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): A theoretical computer system that possesses human-equivalent or superior intellectual capabilities across any domain—reasoning, abstract thought, transferring learnings from one field to another, and metacognition.

Artificial Superintelligence (ASI): A hypothetical stage where machine intelligence surpasses the collective cognitive capacity of all humans combined in scientific creativity, general wisdom, and social skills.

def diagnose_system(cpu_temp, memory_usage, disk_io):
    """Simple expert rule-based reasoning engine."""
    alerts = []
    if cpu_temp > 85.0:
        alerts.append("CRITICAL: CPU thermal throttling detected.")
    if memory_usage > 90.0:
        alerts.append("WARNING: High RAM pressure, trigger garbage collector.")
    if disk_io > 500.0:
        alerts.append("ALERT: Disk saturation, bottleneck in I/O queue.")

    return alerts if alerts else ["Status: All systems optimal"]

print(diagnose_system(cpu_temp=89.2, memory_usage=94.1, disk_io=120.0))
Rule-based systems use deterministic heuristics to mimic domain expertise, the foundation of early AI in the 1970s and 1980s.
Pro Tip

The Turing Test, proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, evaluates whether a machine can exhibit conversational behavior indistinguishable from that of a human.

The Modern AI Taxonomy

Artificial Intelligence is the overarching umbrella term covering any machine that mimics human cognitive functions.

Machine Learning (ML) is a subfield of AI where algorithms learn statistical patterns directly from empirical data without being explicitly hand-coded.

Deep Learning (DL) is a specialized subset of ML based on multi-layered Artificial Neural Networks that learn hierarchical representations from raw sensory inputs.
