JSONB Document Storage & GIN Indexing

Query and index schemaless JSON documents inside relational PostgreSQL tables with sub-millisecond GIN indexes.

JSON vs. JSONB

JSON: Stores raw textual strings. Fast insertion, but must re-parse on every read.
JSONB: Stores decomposed binary representation. Slightly slower insert, but blazing fast querying, supports indexing and operators like ->, ->>, and @>.
Indexing and Querying JSONB Data
CREATE TABLE event_logs (
    log_id INT GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY,
    payload JSONB NOT NULL
);

-- Create a GIN inverted index for sub-millisecond key lookups
CREATE INDEX idx_logs_payload ON event_logs USING GIN (payload);

-- Query using the containment operator (@>)
SELECT * FROM event_logs WHERE payload @> '{"action": "LOGIN", "status": "FAIL"}';
