The 40-Pin GPIO Header & Voltage Rails

Understand 3.3V logic levels, Ground pins, 5V power rails, and Broadcom (BCM) vs. Physical pin numbering.

3.3V Logic Level Warning

The Raspberry Pi GPIO pins operate strictly at 3.3V logic levels. Connecting a 5V sensor directly to a GPIO input pin without a voltage divider or logic level shifter will permanently fry the SoC chip!

Warning / Pitfall

Never apply 5V directly to any GPIO pin. Always use a level shifter or resistor voltage divider.
