Parsing & Generating XML in JavaScript
DOMParser, parseFromString, XMLSerializer, and XMLHttpRequest
Modern web browsers provide native APIs to parse XML strings into live DOM Document trees and serialize DOM nodes back into XML text.
DOMParser and XMLSerializer APIs
DOMParser.parseFromString(xmlString, "application/xml"): Parses raw XML text into an XML Document object navigable with standard DOM queries (querySelector, getElementsByTagName).
XMLSerializer.serializeToString(xmlDoc): Serializes an XML Document or element node back into formatted XML text.
Checking for parsing errors: Inspect doc.querySelector("parsererror") to catch syntax errors gracefully.
const xmlText = `<?xml version="1.0"?>
<user role="admin">
<username>AdaLovelace</username>
<email>ada@analytical.org</email>
</user>`;
// Parse XML string into DOM
const parser = new DOMParser();
const xmlDoc = parser.parseFromString(xmlText, "application/xml");
// Check for syntax errors
const parserError = xmlDoc.querySelector("parsererror");
if (parserError) {
console.error("XML Parsing Error:", parserError.textContent);
} else {
const username = xmlDoc.querySelector("username").textContent;
const role = xmlDoc.documentElement.getAttribute("role");
console.log(`User: ${username}, Role: ${role}`);
