SQL Injection (SQLi) & Defense Mechanisms

Anatomy of an injection attack, OR 1=1, and Parameterized Prepared Statements

SQL Injection occurs when untrusted user input is directly concatenated into a dynamic SQL query, allowing an attacker to manipulate the database command structure.

Anatomy of a SQL Injection Exploit

Vulnerable query: SELECT * FROM users WHERE email = '" + userInput + "'

Malicious payload: admin@site.com' OR '1'='1

Resulting executed query: SELECT * FROM users WHERE email = 'admin@site.com' OR '1'='1' -> evaluates to TRUE for all rows, leaking entire database tables.

THE UNIVERSAL DEFENSE: Prepared Statements (Parameterized Queries). Separates SQL code from user data parameters, making SQL injection mathematically impossible.

Vulnerable Concatenation vs Secure Prepared Statement
// VULNERABLE: Direct string interpolation allows SQLi!
// db.query(`SELECT * FROM accounts WHERE id = '${req.body.id}'`);

// SECURE: Parameterized Query (Prepared Statement)
const sql = "SELECT * FROM accounts WHERE id = $1";
const values = [req.body.id];

// The database engine compiles the query structure FIRST,
// treating parameter values strictly as literal data strings!
const result = await db.query(sql, values);
Parameterized queries compile the SQL AST prior to binding parameters, preventing code injection.
