Compilers, Interpreters & JIT Runtimes
Examine how compiled languages (C, Rust, Go) differ from interpreted languages (Python, JS) and explore hybrid JIT compilation.
Comparing Compilation Strategies
Different languages use different strategies to bridge human code and machine execution:
Compiled (AOT - Ahead-Of-Time): Tools like
gcc, clang, or rustc compile the entire source code into an OS-specific binary executable before running. Fastest raw execution, but must be recompiled for each operating system.Interpreted: An interpreter reads and executes the script line by line at runtime (e.g., standard CPython). Slower raw throughput, but provides immediate feedback without compilation pauses.
Bytecode + Virtual Machine (JIT): Languages like Java and JavaScript compile source code into platform-independent intermediate bytecode, which a Virtual Machine (JVM or V8) executes and optimizes using Just-In-Time (JIT) machine code compilation.
| Language | Execution Model | Speed | Portability |
|---|---|---|---|
| C / C++ / Rust | Ahead-Of-Time Compiled | Maximum Native Speed | Requires Recompilation per OS |
| Python (CPython) | Interpreted / Bytecode | Moderate Execution | High (Runs anywhere with Python) |
| Java / C# | Bytecode + JIT VM | Near-Native Speed | High (Runs on any JVM / CLR) |
| JavaScript | V8 JIT Engine | Fast Dynamic Speed | Universal (Browser and Node.js) |
