Bash Shell Scripting Tutorial• 5 min read

Bash Introduction, Shebang & File Permissions

The Linux shell environment, #!/usr/bin/env bash, and chmod +x execution

Bash (Bourne Again SHell) is the default command-line interpreter on Linux and macOS, ubiquitous in DevOps automation, CI/CD pipelines, and server orchestration.

The Anatomy of a Shell Script

The Shebang (#!/usr/bin/env bash): The very first line of a script. Informs the OS kernel which binary should interpret the file.

Execution Permissions: Scripts must be granted execute permissions via chmod +x script.sh.

Running: Execute via ./script.sh or bash script.sh.

Your First Executable Bash Script (deploy.sh)
#!/usr/bin/env bash

# Print greeting to standard output
echo "Starting Codexia Deployment Automation..."

CURRENT_USER=$(whoami)
CURRENT_DATE=$(date "+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S")

echo "Executed by: $CURRENT_USER at $CURRENT_DATE"
The shebang line points to the bash interpreter path.
